The apparatus consists of a metal bar mounted on a support and a brass calibrator.

Ideal for classroom demonstrations of thermal expansion and cooling contraction of metals.

The gauge has a horizontal groove with a length slightly greater than that of the metal bar, a circular hole with a diameter slightly greater than that of the bar and a recess with a width slightly smaller than the diameter of the bar.

The bar measures 4 inches wide and 9.5 inches tall, including the handle. The caliper measures 4.5 inches tall and 5.75 inches wide.

This apparatus is designed to introduce aspects of the thermal expansion and cooling contraction of metals. The gauge has three features: a horizontal groove slightly longer than the length of the metal bar, a circular hole slightly larger in diameter than the bar, and a recess slightly smaller in width than the diameter of the bar. The first two features can be used to demonstrate that the dimensions of the bar, when heated, can exceed the dimensions of the groove and hole (unheated). The third feature can be used to demonstrate that the recess, when the surrounding metal is heated, can be adjusted to accommodate the diameter of the unheated bar.

An elevated temperature is required for sufficient expansion of the bar and/or calibrator (e.g., a Bunsen burner). This apparatus must be used with a heat-proof support for the calibrator and a heat-proof surface to receive the heated components after use.
