They can be used to introduce numbers and illustrate mathematical operations. The availability and use of manipulative materials (bead necklaces, patterned cards, tangrams, cuisenaire equipment, sights, puzzles, dominoes, legos, etc.) are a fundamental support for problem solving and for representing mathematical concepts.
