Set of 51 fractional bars

Set of 51 fractional bars in nine different colors that vary depending on the number of parts into which they are divided.

In addition to the blue bar representing the unit, the set presents bars of different colors that represent the following fractions: one half, one third, one quarter, one fifth, one sixth, one eighth, one tenth and one twelfth.

There are other sets where we can work on fractions, see here. These materials are suitable for developing the understanding of fractions as parts of a unit or a set and as division of whole numbers where we can work on problems of reconstruction of the unit.

Furthermore, in later years the following may also be used:

  • in the comparison of rational numbers in the form of a fraction;
  • in identifying relationships between different representations of a number (decimal, fractional and percentage)
  • in the approach to different operations with rational numbers.

Activity example
As an initial task, the child can be asked to rebuild the unit with pieces of the same color. Assuming that we chose the color green, we then ask how many bars were needed to complete the unit. Finally, we can conclude that each of the green bars corresponds to one fifth of the unit.
